Softball Takes On League-Leading Kent StateBUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team hosted Mid-American Conference rival Kent State on Saturday, battling the Golden Flashes on Nan Harvey Field through seven rainy and windy innings. The Bulls were upended by Kent State 5-0. The Golden Flashes entered the contest with the MAC’s best record as well as the top pitching staff in the Conference. Kent State scored one run in the top of the second and two more in the top of the third on a two-run homer to left-center to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth. After holding the Golden Flashes scoreless through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the Bulls appeared poised for a comeback.
With one down in the top of the sixth, Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) drew a walk and advanced to second on a Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) single to right-center. After another Buffalo out, Stephanie Visperas (Newark, CA/Newark Memorial) drew a walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, Buffalo recorded the inning’s third out on a strikeout by the next batter. After the Golden Flashes inked two more runs in the top of the seventh, the Bulls were unable to answer in the second stanza, and Kent State emerged with the 5-0 win.
For Buffalo, Barr was credited with the loss, pitching the complete game, recording three strikeouts and four earned runs while surrendering just one walk. Offensively, Russell went 1-for-2 with a walk to lead UB. Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster), Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler), Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Barr also recorded one hit each. The Bulls return to action on Sunday against Kent State. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.
