Sophie Barstad

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo sophomore pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office this afternoon. The honor is the first of Barstad's career and the first for a UB softball player this season.

Barstad went 2-0 in two appearances last week, including a three-hit 2-0 shutout of league-leading Central Michigan on Wednesday. The loss was only the second conference loss of the season for the Chippewas, who currently stand atop the MAC standings with a 10-2 league record. Barstad also pitched a complete-game 8-1 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep at Youngstown State on Thursday. For the week, she allowed just one run in 13.0 innings pitched for a 0.54 earned run average while striking out six. She has an 8-8 overall record with a 2.45 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. In MAC games only, she is 5-1 with three shutouts and a 1.54 ERA.

The Bulls (15-23 overall, 8-5 MAC) are next in action on Wednesday, April 27 when they host St. Bonaventure in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 pm at Nan Harvey Field. Buffalo is currently riding a five-game winning streak, the longest of its Division I era, and has won nine of its last 11 games and 11 of its last 15.
