Bulls Split With Bonnies

Freshman Heather Robbins earns win on the mound, drives in two runs

Freshman Heather Robbins
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team (9-35) split a doubleheader with local rival St. Bonaventure (8-27) this afternoon in Olean. The Bulls lost a 2-1 decision in the opener before scoring three runs in the fifth inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) earned the win on the mound and also drove in two runs, while freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) and senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg/Erie CC) were both 3-for-4 from the plate to lead the Bulls' offensive attack in the win.

In the opener, the Bulls left one runner on base in the first inning and two in the second before the Bonnies took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-out, two-run triple by Tricia Hildebrand. The Bulls attempted a comeback, but could only get one run across the plate in the fifth inning when a single by freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) with two outs scored Round, who had reached base with a triple. The Bulls left two runners on base in the fifth, but were held hitless in the final two innings of the game by SBU pitcher Emily Hart. Buffalo pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) went the distance on the mound for the Bulls, allowing just four hits and striking out seven.

The Bulls got on the board first in game two when Robbins' sacrifice fly to center scored Round with the first run of the game. The Bulls left two runners stranded on base to end the inning, and St. Bonaventure then scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulls, however, answered with three runs of their own in the fifth inning and were able to retire the Bonnies in order in the last three innings to earn the victory. Ross began Buffalo's rally in the fifth with a walk, and she advanced to second on a single by Round. A two-out single by Lawrence scored both runners, and Lawrence then crossed the plate with the game-winning run on a triple by Robbins. Robbins also struck out seven batters and allowed just five hits in seven innings of work on the mound to earn her sixth win of the season.

The Bulls return to conference action this weekend at Marshall. Buffalo will play a doubleheader against the Thundering Herd on Friday, April 27 beginning at 6 pm and then finish the three-game series with a single game on Saturday, April 28 at 1 pm.
