Bulls Swept In Doubleheader

No-hitter highlights Syracuse softball sweep

BUFFALO, NY - Freshman Tara DiMaggio threw a no-hitter striking out 10 to highlight a Syracuse sweep of the University at Buffalo in women's softball action at UB Softball Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Syracuse won the opener 11-0 while taking the nightcap 6-2.

DiMaggio faced the minimum 15 Bulls in the five inning contest. A dropped foul ball by third baseman Jackie Herrman off the bat of Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) in the fourth inning prevented the perfect game. Malone struck out to end the inning.

Syracuse scored nine runs in the second inning which included back-to-back home runs by Herrman and Cheryl Julicher off losing pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew). Herrman's homer accounted for three RBIs.

In the nightcap, the Bulls jumped out early with a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Jen Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi District) scored on wild pitches by Missy Bieman. Haynes led the Bulls with two hits in the game and raised her team-best batting average to .392.

The Bulls held the 2-0 edge until the fifth when the Orangewomen put five runs on the board. highlighted by Herrman's bases loaded triple to right field. Herrman scored when third baseman Kim Sudakow (Utica, NY/Proctor) mishandled the throw.

UB is now 5-29 while Syracuse improves to 19-20-1. The Bulls travel to St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader on Thursday.
