Bulls Split With Bowling Green

Diaz earns twelfth win on the mound

BOWLING GREEN, OH- The University at Buffalo softball team played Bowling Green in a key MAC East double header this afternoon at Meserve Softball Field. The Bulls dropped game one 7-1 but came back to win game two, 2-1 to bring their record to an even 22-22 (5-11 MAC).

Game one stayed scoreless until the top of the third inning when Buffalo put a run on the board. Dana Carter started off the inning with a single to left field and then stole second. Kristen Gallipani walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. With runners at second and third Lindsey Hampton singled up the middle, sending Carter home for the score. Carter went two-for-three at the plate for the Bulls. The Falcons came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the bottom of the fifth. Bowling Green’s Hayley Wiemer scored a three run home run in the bottom of the sixth to wrap up the scoring and seal the 7-1 Falcon win.

Terese Diaz started on the mound for the Bulls, striking out two batters in 3.1 innings Sharon Barr finished the game, pitching the remaining 2.2 innings, striking out two Falcons.

In game two, Bowling Green got the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Neither team scored again until Buffalo earned a pair in the top of the fifth inning. Barr doubled and moved to third off a sacrifice bunt from Carter. Dominique Carcone came in as a pinch runner and scored Buffalo’s first run as Gallipani singled to the short stop and successfully stole second on the next play. Candice Sheehangot on base on a Bowling Green error and advanced to second on the throw, allowing Gallipani to score the winning run. Barr went two-for-three in the second game, with two doubles and a walk.

Diaz pitched the complete game, holding the Falcons to one run and two hits, while striking out nine batters.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow when they take on Toledo at 2pm at Toledo’s Scott Park.
