Bulls host Regional-Rival Bonnies

Jaime Sheffler belts first career homer

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team hosted St. Bonaventure in a non-league double header on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Bonnies 5-0 and 4-2.

In the first game, both the Bulls and the Bonnies were unable to score through the first four innings until St. Bonaventure put up a three-run fifth. After scoring two more in the top of the sixth, SBU placed the score at 5-0 to take the win.

Buffalo collected two hits in the game as sophomores Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) both finished the contest 1-for-3. Freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) gave the Bulls seven strong innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs while striking out two.

In game two, the Bulls used a potent offensive attack to jump ahead of the Bonnies from the get-go. Senior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) commenced the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on an Zilka sacrifice fly to deep left field.

Then after holding St. Bonaventure scoreless in the top of the second, Buffalo extended its lead over the Bonnies by two when freshman Jaime Sheffler (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango Central) slammed a towering homer over the left-center fence. The solo shot was Sheffler’s first of her career.

Unfortunately, that was the extent of the offense the Bulls were able to produce, as St. Bonaventure plated one in the top of the fourth and another to knot the score at two in the top of the fifth.

The Bonnies scored two more in the top of the seventh and the Bulls were unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning, the final score ending as 4-2, SBU.

In the nightcap, Sheffler ended 2-for-2 with a walk while Carter finished 1-for-1 with three walks. Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy), Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) and Greene all ended the game with one hit each.

Carter threw the complete seven innings on the mound for Buffalo, striking out four while walking none.

The Bulls are next in action on Thursday, as UB is set to host Canisius in a non-league doubleheader. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.
