Softball Weekly Release - April 24·The Week Past·
·On Deck·
Mother Nature Strikes Again For the Bulls softball squad, the theme this season might be "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature". UB's weekend road trip to face Siena and Albany was washed out by a steady rain that soaked the northeast the entire Easter weekend. No makeup dates were announced for either contest. The Bulls have now lost six games this season due to inclement weather.
At the Plate Through 30 games, the Bulls are hitting .255. Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) leads the Bulls with a .382 average although she had missed four games with a broken finger. Haynes also leads the team with 15 runs scored and six steals. Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East) tops the team with 13 RBIs and a single-season school record six doubles while hitting .314. Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) leads UB with four home runs and is second with 12 RBIs.
On the Mound The Bulls' pitching staff holds a team earned run average of 6.58 this season. Jessica York (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) leads the squad at 4.83 with a 2-5 record. Left-hander Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) leads the club with 70.2 innings pitched, 26 strikeouts and eight complete games. Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) is 2-10 with 20 strikeouts.
Rewriting the Record Books Several single-season records have already fallen this year and many other records are within reach for the 2000 Bulls. During the Bulls spring break openers in Florida, Malone became the single-season and career leader in home runs with four surpassing Karen Macris' total of three in both categories. The six doubles by Madden this season broke the single-season mark of five set by Robin Dulmage in 1980. Dulmage, Grace Hanlon and Joyce Stronka hold the career record with eight apiece. With 26 hits this season, Haynes is now tied for fourth on the single-season chart with Marie Bajko (1980) and Patty Murphy (1985). She is ten hits shy of passing Macris' 1985 total of 35 for first place. Murphy holds the career mark with 59. In the field, first baseman Tina Breakell (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) has already become the single-season leader with 181 putouts passing Rachael Walter's 1986 mark of 139. Pam Gabel holds the career mark with 244. Lisa Cox (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) now has 62 assists from her shortstop position making her the single-season leader in that department. Linda Grimmer had 56 in 1985 and Kim Ring (1983-85) holds the career mark with 100. Having played in all 30 games thus far this season, Cox and Kim Coon (Belding, MI/Belding) have established the single season mark previously held by Grimmer and Macris in 1985 of 27. Breakell has played in 29 games while Madden has played 28 and Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi District) has seen action in 27.
Up Next The Bulls are busy this week. UB is at Cleveland
State on Monday April 24 for a doubleheader with the
Vikings (15-27). UB immediately returns home for a twinbill
on Tuesday as they host Syracuse (19-20) at UB
Softball Stadium at 3:00 pm. UB split a pair with the
Orangewomen April 14, falling 9-0 in the opening and taking the
nightcap 2-1. The Bulls then hit the road for a pair at
St. Bonaventure (11-22) on Thursday and are back home for
a doubleheader with Albany (20-5) on Saturday. The
Bulls conclude the week with a trip to Ithaca to face Cornell
(23-11) in a doubleheader on Sunday. |
