Softball Hosts Regional-Rival NiagaraBUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team took on the Niagara Purple Eagles in a non-league doubleheader on Nan Harvey Field Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls were upended in both stanzas, falling 10-7 in the opener and later suffering a 5-1 setback.
Freshman Lindsey Hampton (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) had a career day in the batters box, finishing the day 4-for-7 with a double and three RBIs. Niagara scored seven runs through the first three innings in the day’s opener to take a quick 7-0 lead. Buffalo, however, mounted a comeback, inking one run in the bottom of the third and five more in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) hit a third inning triple with one out to help get things going for the Bulls and Hampton picked up UB’s first RBI with a bunt-single to score Bejarano.
Then, after holding the Purple Eagles scoreless in the top of the fourth, Buffalo exploded at the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) doubled to center field to lead-off the inning and advanced to third on a Wendy Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena/Bowling Green) single up the middle. Kelly Cummings (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) then scored Schneider with a single to right field. Hampton picked up another RBI in the game and Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) put the Ball in play to score Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) with Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) following Russell’s lead, allowing Hampton and Bejarano to plate runs to set the score at 7-6 through four.
After a scoreless fifth, Niagara posted a trio of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-6 lead, but the Bulls would not quit, making a final comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh as Barr went deep to left-center. Hampton ended the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Bejarano, Barr, Schneider, Sheehan, Cummings and Gallipani ended with one hit each. In game two, Niagara tallied two quick runs, but after a scoreless second, Buffalo got on the board in the bottom of the third, sparked by a two-out double from Bejarano. Hampton then followed with a double of her own to left, allowing Bejarano to score. Single runs from the Purple Eagles in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth allowed Niagara to take a 5-1 lead into the top of the sixth and hang on to swipe the victory. The Bulls return to action on Saturday, when Buffalo will host the Kent State Golden Flashes in a Mid-American Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.
