Softball Weekly ReleaseBULLS LOSE TWO TO COLGATE
The Bulls dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Colgate on Wednesday, losing an 8-1 decision in the opener before giving up four runs in the 10th inning of game two to lose the nightcap, 7-3. The Bulls had come back to tie the score at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) hit a single to drive in freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District), who had put herself in scoring position with a double to center field. The Bulls left 11 runners on base during the nightcap, and at least one in each of the final five innings. Ross and freshman Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) were both 3-for-5 from the plate and Round was 2-for-4 in the game, helping the Bulls outhit the Red Raiders by a 13-10 margin. Ross led the Buffalo attack, going 4-for-7 with two RBIs on the afternoon. Sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) also had four hits in the two games, including a 3-for-3 performance from the plate in the opener.
BOWLING GREEN SWEEPS SERIES
The Bulls then lost three games to visiting Bowling Green in a Mid-American Conference match-up at UB Stadium over the weekend. The Falcons entered the weekend in first place in the MAC's East Division, and they outscored the Bulls by a 12-2 margin in the three games. Bowling Green scored four unanswered runs, two in the fifth and two in the seventh, to earn a 4-1 win over the Bulls in the first game of the series on Friday. Buffalo had opened a 1-0 lead in the third inning when sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) hit an RBI single to left center, scoring sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). The Bulls then lost both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, 3-0 and 5-1. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led the Bulls' effort with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate, a double and two stolen bases in the two games. She also scored Buffalo's lone run on the afternoon, stealing home in the fourth inning of the nightcap when the Falcons attempted to throw freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) out stealing second. Nasti had reached base on an error, but she singled up the middle to start the Buffalo sixth and spoil BGSU pitcher Andrea Genter's no-hitter. Robbins also singled in the inning, and freshman Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) got the Bulls' only other hit in the game to lead off the seventh. Kensy and senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg/Erie CC) were both 2-for-3 from the plate in Saturday's opener, but the Bulls recorded just five hits as a team compared to BGSU's 15.
NASTI AND ROSS END STREAKS
Buffalo freshmen Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) both saw hitting streaks come to an end this weekend in a 4-1 loss to Bowling Green on Friday. Nasti was 0-for-2 from the plate, snapping an 11-game hitting streak, and Ross was 0-for-3 to snap a six-game hitting streak. Prior to that game, the last time Nasti had not had at least one hit in a game was on April 2 in a 12-2 loss to Akron. Nasti's batting average has dipped slightly below .400 (.398, 51-for-128) for the time being. Her .416 average at the end of last week was good enough for 21st place in the nation according to the April 17 NCAA statistics report.
ON THE ROAD FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON
Saturday's doubleheader with Bowling Green was Buffalo's final home game of the 2001 season. The Bulls, however, are still scheduled to appear locally in doubleheaders at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, April 25 and at Niagara on Wednesday, May 2.
