UB Softball Falls to Big Four Rival Niagara Erin Zilka earns second home run in as many games NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team played a single game against local rival Niagara this afternoon. The second game of the double header was cancelled because of inclement weather. The Bulls fell to the Purple Eagles, 8-1, as Erin Zilka hit her second home run in as many games to earn the lone Buffalo run.
Zilka’s home run came in the first inning to put the Bulls up early, however they could not hold on to the lead for long as Niagara came roaring back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Buffalo was held by a strong Niagara defense and did not see another hit until the fifth inning. Buffalo’s best chance for a score came in the top of the sixth with Lindsey Hampton and Kristin Waldron each having hits. Dana Carter also had a hit in the game. Niagara went on to score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the win.
Terese Diaz pitched the first two innings for Buffalo, striking out three batters before being relieved by Sharon Barr. Barr struck out four batters in the remaining four innings. UB will be back in action this weekend as they wrap up the road portion of their season. The Bulls will take on Bowling Green in a doubleheader on Friday followed by a pair of games at Toledo on Saturday and Sunday.
