Softball Concludes Weekend CompetitionBUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team was upended in its Mid-American Conference contest on Sunday, falling to the Western Michigan Broncos 9-2 on a gorgeous afternoon in Buffalo.
The Broncos had a productive first two innings, establishing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and later extending their advantage by six, plating five runs in the top of the second thanks in part to a grand slam with zero outs. The Bulls were able to close in on WMU, inking two in the bottom of the second. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville, NY) drew a walk to open the inning and sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) picked up both RBIs as the sophomore catcher roped a shot over the centerfield fence.
After neither team scored in the third or fourth, Western Michigan tallied another run in the top of the fifth to extend the Bronco’s lead over the Bulls to five. Two more in the top of the sixth gave WMU a 9-2 advantage. The Bulls gathered five hits from five difference players in the game, as Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont), Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union), Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet), Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) and Zilka all contributed.
Colleen Greene’s (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) insertion at shortstop marked the seventh different position that the senior has played this season as Green has seen time at every position except for pitcher and catcher. Additionally, rookie Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) stole her first career base in Sunday’s match-up against the Broncos. Buffalo will return to action on Tuesday, as the Bulls are scheduled to host St. Bonaventure in a non-league doubleheader. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.
