STONY BROOK, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team rolled to a convincing doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook this afternoon, 9-3 and 10-1. The Bulls had 24 hits on the day, including five by senior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and four apiece by junior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) and freshman Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy). Nasti had three home runs on the day, including a grand slam, and she drove in eight of the Bulls' 19 runs in the two games. With the two wins, Buffalo improved to 17-19 overall on the season.

Stony Brook (20-25) opened the scoring on the afternoon on a solo home run to center by Hayley Durham in the bottom of the second inning of game one. The Bulls responded with three runs in the top of the third, with Russell stealing home and Nasti hitting a two-run homer that scored senior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's).

Buffalo exploded for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan). A double by Nasti and a single by Magur also drove in runs in the inning. The Seawolves scored twice in the sixth before a leadoff home run by Magur in the top of the seventh finished off the scoring. Freshman pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) went the distance on the mound for the Bulls, striking out four and allowing just six hits and two earned runs. Starter Angela Andrews took the loss for Stony Brook, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in four innings pitched.

Nasti got things started in game two with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first. Nasti's grand slam highlighted a six-run fifth inning for the Bulls that also included an RBI-single by Ross and an RBI-double by Pace. Magur drove in two more runs in the sixth with a double, and Barstad was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to plate freshman Shannon Prochaska (Aloha, OR/Aloha) with the other run in the inning. Stony Brook's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Margaret Blair that spoiled the Bulls' shutout. Sophomore pitcher Theresa Gugger (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley/Oneonta State) earned her first win of the season on the mound, allowing six hits in the complete game. Stony Brook's Sarah Hoffman suffered the loss, giving up 10 hits and nine earned runs and striking out six.

Nasti was 5-for-6 with three home runs, a double, five runs scored and eight RBIs on the day, while Magur was 4-for-7 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Ross and Pace both had three hits on the day.

The Bulls are home this weekend for a three-game Mid-American Conference series against Western Michigan. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game both begin at 1 pm.
