Bulls Bested By Broncos In Eight Inning Heartbreaker

Dana Carter goes 2-for-3 with three RBIs

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a tight extra inning Mid-American Conference battle with Western Michigan on Saturday, falling to the Broncos 9-4 in eight innings.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulls got their offense in motion in the bottom of the third inning, exploding for a four-run, two-out rally. With one out, Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) got on thanks to a WMU throwing error. After another UB out, Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) drew a walk to move Greene over. Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) then roped a single up the middle. With the bases studded, Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) tattooed a bases-clearing double and wound up on third following the Western Michigan attempt to get Barr at the plate. Carter ultimately scored on the next pitch, a wild pitch into the backstop, to place the Bulls ahead 4-0.

The Broncos were able to close in on the Buffalo lead, however, as WMU scored a trio of runs in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer that sailed deep over the right-center fence. Western Michigan then tied the game in the top of the sixth.

With neither team scoring in the seventh, the game went into extra innings, where the Broncos were able to seal the deal with a five-run eighth to capture the final 9-4 win.

The Bulls finished with four runs on four hits, as Carter ended the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) ended 1-for-4 with a sharp double to right-center while Barr picked up the other UB hit.

Despite picking up the setback on the mound for Buffalo, Barr pitched the complete eight-inning game, facing 35 batters and striking out five while surrendering just four walks and six earned runs.

The Bulls will take on the Broncos again on Sunday, as the teams are scheduled for a conference contest set to begin at 1:00 pm at Nan Harvey Stadium.
