Western Michigan Shuts Out Bulls In Doubleheader

Broncos win first game in extra innings, the second, 6-0

KALAMAZOO, MI - The MAC West-leading Western Michigan Broncos swept a doubleheader from the University at Buffalo softball team, winning by scores of 1-0 in an extra-inning opener and 6-0 in the second game, Friday afternoon at Fran Ebert Field.

The Bulls and the Broncos took part in a pitcher's duel in the first game, as neither team was able to cross the plate in the first seven innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth when Tricia VanDerSlick hit a walk-off single up the left side, scoring the only run of the game.

Junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) pitched the complete game for the Bulls, scattering six hits, while allowing the one run, which was unearned. Barstad (9-18) struck out three and walked two. Krysten Shumaker picked up the win for Western Michigan, allowing just four hits and striking out 10.

Freshman Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) was the Bulls' leading hitter with two singles in her four at bats.

In the second game, Western Michigan continued where it left off in the first contest, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Broncos added another run in the bottom of the third inning, an unearned run since the runner got on base due to a passed ball on a strike out.

In the sixth inning, the Broncos broke the game wide open, scoring another three runs to take a commanding lead in the contest.

The Bulls were unable to make any threat in the second game as they got just three hits off of WMU starter Kyla Sullivan. Sullivan struck out two batters as she picked up the win. Freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) picked up the loss for the Bulls as she allowed eight hits and six runs, five of those being earned. She also struck out two batters as her record drops to 1-5 on the season.

Sophomore Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) recorded two of the three UB hits, both singles. The other hit came off the bat of Barstad, who was the designated player in game two.

The Bulls remain on the road as they begin a two-game set against Northern Illinois. The first game is tomorrow beginning at 7:00 pm. The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday with a 2:00 pm contest.
