Softball Hosts Huskies in MAC DoubleheaderBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team played host to a solid Northern Illinois squad on Friday afternoon, falling twice in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader. The Bulls were narrowly upended 9-4 in the opening game and fell 10-1 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Buffalo gave up two runs in the top of the first, but struck back, putting one on the board in the bottom of the second as freshman pitcher Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) hit her second homerun of the season, a leadoff shot over the left-center fence. After a scoreless third, the Huskies exploded for a five run fourth to take a 7-1 lead but UB fought back, plating a duo of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) drew a walk and advanced on a Barr single. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) then roped a two-RBI double to right to bring the Bulls within four.
After holding the Huskies in the top of the fifth, Buffalo inked another run in the bottom half of the inning. Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) got the ball rolling, as the junior hit a one-out single up the middle. Hansen then advanced to second on a Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) single through the right side. Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) singled to load the bases and Zilka was then hit with a pitch to plate the run. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Bulls would get, as Northern Illinois chalked two runs in the top of the seventh to set the score at 9-4. Hansen finished the game 3-for-4 while Schneider, Barr and Carter all finished with two hits each. In the second game of the day, NIU raced out to a quick lead, scoring six runs over the first two innings. The Bulls scored one in the bottom of the third, but a four-run top of the sixth by Northern Illinois pushed the Huskies ahead by nine and a scoreless bottom half from Buffalo allowed NIU to take the 10-1 win after six.
Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy)notched Buffalo’s only hit in the game. The freshman outfielder also stole two bases in the contest. The team returns to action on Saturday, as the Bulls are set to host Western Michigan in a single game. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
