Softball Drops Two at CMU

Junior Breanne Nasti leads Bulls' offense with three hits on the afternoon

MT. PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo softball team completed its three-game series at defending Mid-American Conference champion Central Michigan this afternoon by dropping both games of a doubleheader, 5-2 and 7-0. Junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led the Buffalo offense with three hits on the afternoon, including a 2-for-3 performance with a double and one run scored in game one. The losses drop the Bulls' record to 14-16 overall and 4-8 in the MAC.

The Bulls got on the board first in game one when Nasti doubled with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and then came home on a double by senior Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering). Buffalo took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run to right field by junior Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District), her first of the season, but the Chippewas (21-13, 10-5 MAC) put five runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to earn the come-from-behind win. CMU pitcher Amber Puchalski helped her own cause with a two-out, two-run single to give the Chippewas the lead for good. The hit and RBI were Puchalski's first of her career. She allowed just five hits in the game while striking out nine for her 10th win of the season. Senior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) suffered the loss for the Bulls despite giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven.

A two-out home run by Michelle Brander in the bottom of the first inning started the Chippewas' onslaught in game two. Central Michigan scored three runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth, taking advantage of six Buffalo errors, while pitcher Jessica Garvin held the Bulls to just three hits and struck out seven for her second career shutout. Nasti, senior Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) and freshman Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) accounted for Buffalo's three hits in the nightcap. Starting pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) gave up four hits and three earned runs in 3.1 innings, and junior Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) pitched the final 2.2 innings of the game, allowing one unearned run on three hits.

The Bulls are now scheduled to play doubleheaders at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, April 22 and at Niagara on Wednesday, April 23 before getting back to MAC play with a three-game series against Miami (OH) on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26.
