Bulls Host RedHawks In Softball Home-OpenerBUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team played its 2008 home-opener on Friday afternoon as the Bulls hosted the Miami RedHawks in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Nan Harvey Field. UB was upended 9-1 in the day’s opening game and suffered a 1-0 setback in game two. The Bulls ran into a hot-hitting Miami squad in the day’s first game, as the RedHawks scored five runs in the top of the first, while adding single runs in both the second and third to take a 7-0 lead through three.
Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) got Buffalo on the scoreboard in the top of the third, as the sophomore slammed a first-pitch bomb over the left field fence for her team-leading fourth homer of the season. Miami, however, was able to add two more runs to steal the 9-1 win. Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego), Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) each recorded a hit in the game.
The game remained scoreless down the stretch, as the contest emerged as a pitcher’s duel. Barr pitched the complete game three-hitter while as a team, the Bulls out-hit the RedHawks. Russell, Barr, Hansen and Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) turned in one hit each. The Bulls will return to action on Saturday, scheduled to host
MAC-rival Ball State. Game time is slated for 2:00 pm on Nan Harvey
