Bulls Split With Canisius

Buffalo wins 3-2 in the opener, but falls 1-0 in game two

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team split a doubleheader against cross-town rival Canisius, winning the first game 3-2, but falling in game two, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The first contest began as a pitchers duel that saw both starters pitch no-hitters into the fourth inning. Canisius got on the board first in the fourth inning, scoring on a throwing error by third base.

The Bulls tied the game up in the sixth inning on a home run from Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby), her sixth of the season, and she now leads the team with 23 RBIs. However, in the bottom half of the sixth, Canisius retook the lead on a single down the left field line.

The Bulls would not go quietly and after the first two batters in the seventh inning walked, sophomore Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) sacrificed them up a bag to put both runners in scoring position. During the next at bat the Canisius catcher tried for the pick off play at third, but hit Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett) in the back, sending the ball into the outfield. Cafazzo would come in to score as well as Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill).

Barstad closed the door in the seventh to pick up her ninth win of the season. Barstad pitched the complete game, allowing two runs on five hits, just one of those runs being earned. The junior struck out seven Canisius batters, while walking three.

In the nightcap, Canisius scored a run on a wild pitch in the first inning and that held up throughout the contest as the Golden Griffins escaped with a 1-0 win.

Freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) pitched extremely well in the defeat, throwing a complete game, while allowing just two hits. She struck out a career high six batters in the contest.

The Bulls outhit Canisius, 4-2, but were unable to put a run up on the board. Buffalo finishes its 2006 series against Canisius with a 2-1 record.

UB will be back in action on Friday as it plays a doubleheader at Western Michigan. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
