Bulls Come From Behind at Ohio

Buffalo scored two runs in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 win over the Bobcats

ATHENS, OH - The University at Buffalo softball team avenged yesterday's two one-run loses to the Ohio University Bobcats with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory this afternoon to conclude the three-game series. The Bulls capitalized on two Ohio errors to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, moving their record to 14-18 overall and 5-6 in the Mid-American Conference.

Ohio (12-23, 6-6 MAC) scored an unearned run in the fourth inning when pinch-runner Debbie Szalejko stole second, advanced to third on a Buffalo error and then scored on a grounder by Emily Futscher. The Bulls stranded a runner on base in both the fifth and sixth innings before finally getting on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Junior Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) reached base on an error and came around to score thanks to another Ohio error on a hit by freshman Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy).

A groundout to second by junior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) then scored sophomore Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) with the go-ahead run. Picciano was pinch-running for senior Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), who singled earlier in the inning. The Bulls then retired the side in the top of the seventh to come away with the 2-1 win.

Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) pitched the complete game on the mound for the Bulls, allowing just three hits and striking out three while extending her streak of innings without an earned run to 62.0. Ohio's Natalie Armstrong took the loss despite allowing just two hits and no earned runs in the final two innings in relief of starter Kerri Harley.

The Bulls have two non-conference doubleheaders scheduled this week, at Columbia on Wednesday, April 21 and at Stony Brook on Thursday, April 22. They then return home next weekend for a three-game Mid-American Conference series with Western Michigan at Nan Harvey Field. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game will both begin at 1 pm.
