Softball Weekly Release - April 17, 2000·The Week Past·
·On Deck·
Bulls Snap Losing Streak The long drought ended for the Bulls as UB posted a 2-1 win at Syracuse on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader to break their 19-game losing streak. Freshman Jessica York (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) went the distance allowing just three hits and one run to claim the victory. UB picked up just two hits off Syracuse starter Tara DiMaggio, but one was a home run by junior catcher Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) that gave the Bulls a 2-0 edge after two innings. UB opened the scoring in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East) walked, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Syracuse error. Head coach Marie Curran said, "It was a good win beating Syracuse." York's only blemish was a solo homer by Jackie Herman in the fourth inning. The Bulls dropped the opener of the doubleheader, originally scheduled for Wednesday but moved to Friday due to the weather, 9-0, registering one hit, a leadoff single by Madden in the fourth.
Home Debut Spoiled by Niagara The Bulls were shutout in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Niagara, 8-0 and 11-0, in the first games at the new UB Softball Stadium. Freshman first baseman Tina Breakell (Schenctady, NY/Guilderland) was the only Bull to have a hit in both contests. Madden had a double, her sixth of the season, in the nightcap. The two bagger broke Robin Dulmage's single season record of five set in 1980.
Weather Plays Havoc Again Bad weather forced the cancellation of UB's originally planned home opener against St. Bonaventure April 5. The Bulls' April 11 contest vs. Canisius was also scrubbed due to the conditions. A spring snowstorm also pushed UB's meeting with Syracuse from Wednesday to Friday where the Bulls split with the Orangewomen, losing 9-0 then taking the nightcap 2-1.
The Injury Front After missing fourteen games due to a bout of mononucleosis, Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering), UB's leading home run hitter with four returned to the Bulls lineup. However, leading batter Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) missed the weekend contests with Syracuse and Niagara due to a broken finger. Haynes leads the Bulls with a .382 batting average and six stolen bases. Haynes is expected back for the Bulls' upcoming road trip. "Now that everyone's healthy again," said Curran, "we are building back up for the Albany/Siena trip."
At the Plate Through 30 games, the Bulls are hitting .255. Danielle Haynes leads the Bulls with a .382 average although missing last weekend contests with a broken finger. Haynes also leads the team with 15 runs scored and six steals. Stacee Madden tops the team with 13 RBIs and a single-season school record six doubles while hitting .314. Kelly Malone leads UB with four home runs and is second with 12 RBIs. On the Mound The Bulls' pitching staff holds a team earned run average of 6.58 this season. Jessica York leads the squad at 4.83 with a 2-5 record. Left-hander Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) leads the club with 70.2 innings pitched, 26 strikeouts and eight complete games. Sage struck out four in two relief appearances against Niagara on Saturday. Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) is 2-10 with 20 strikeouts.
Up Next The Bulls hit the road for a weekend in the
Capital District with doubleheaders at Siena on Friday and
Albany on Saturday. UB is also in action on the road at
Cleveland State on April 24. |
