Softball Weekly ReleaseBULLS SWEEP ST. BONAVENTURE
The Bulls began the week with a doubleheader sweep of local rival St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, winning by scores of 5-1 and 4-1. The Bulls dominated both games, out-hitting the Bonnies by a 17-10 margin on the day and allowing just one run in the seventh inning of each game. The Bulls' power got them out to early leads in both games, with freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning of the opener and freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) hitting a three-run shot in the second inning of the nightcap. Freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) picked up the win on the mound in game one, striking out six batters. She also drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single. Sophomore pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) allowed just three hits in game two, and just one in the final five innings.
BULLS TAKE ONE OF THREE FROM NORTHERN ILLINOIS
Over the weekend, the Bulls took one of three games from Northern Illinois, the defending MAC West Division champions. The Huskies shut out the Bulls in Friday's single game, 6-0, before Buffalo came back to earn a split in Saturday's doubleheader, winning game one, 6-2, and losing game two, 5-2. In the opening game of the series, freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) gave up just two earned runs and was 2-for-2 from the plate with a double, but the Bulls committed four costly errors and left nine runners stranded on base during the game, eight in the last four innings. They were held scoreless by NIU's Courtney Witvliet, the 2000 MAC Pitcher of the Year. In Saturday's first game, Robbins crossed the plate with Buffalo's go-ahead run on an RBI single by sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) in the third inning, putting Buffalo ahead for good, 3-2. The Bulls added three insurance runs in the sixth inning, and they finished the game with nine hits off of NIU starter Amy Krahula, while sophomore Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) got her third win of the year on the mound for the Bulls, allowing just five hits. Witvliet again held the Bulls' bats at bay in Saturday's nightcap, limiting Buffalo to just five hits and striking out six batters. Buffalo scored a single run in the fourth on a lead-off home run by freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and added one more in the sixth when freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) scored on an error after leading off the inning with a double. Ross finished the afternoon 5-for-7 from the plate with two doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs, while Nasti was 4-for-7 with a double, a home run and two RBIs in the two games.
NASTI SETS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR HITS
To add to her long list of single-season and career records broken this year, just her first at UB, freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) broke senior Danielle Haynes' (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West/Erie CC) school record for hits in a season (41) in Wednesday's doubleheader against St. Bonaventure. Nasti currently leads the Bulls and the MAC in batting average (.416), home runs (10), RBIs (37), total bases (93), on-base percentage (.463) and slugging percentage (.823). She also has a team-high 47 hits, 14 doubles and 20 runs scored so far this season.
SAGE STRONG IN TWO OUTINGS
Sophomore pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) was a perfect 2-0 on the week, pitching two complete games and picking up her first conference win of the year against the defending MAC West Division champions Northern Illinois in a 6-2 win on Saturday. Sage allowed just eight hits and two earned runs in her two starts, giving her a 1.00 ERA for the week. Additionally, she walked just one batter in 14 innings of work while striking out seven.
