Softball Splits With BonniesOLEAN, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team split its Tuesday non-conference doubleheader against St. Bonaventure. The Bulls scored a convincing 6-0 win over the Bonnies in game one and suffered an 8-3 setback in game two. After two scoreless innings in the day’s opening game, Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead after slamming what would be her first of two homers in the game.
Buffalo then held St. Bonaventure scoreless, while plating three more runs in the top of the fourth. Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) got things going with one out, reaching first base on a fielding error. Candice Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena) was able to draw a walk with Bejarano advancing to second and Gallipani then stepped to the plate, roping her second homer of the game to put UB up, 4-0. After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Bulls tallied two more runs in the top of the seventh. Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) led-off the inning with a triple down the right field line. Pinch hitter Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) then picked up a RBI, putting the ball in play to score Zilka from third. Then, with two down, Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) roped her first homer of the season to give Buffalo the 6-0 lead. Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) picked up her first victory of the season, throwing the complete game shutout for UB, allowing just three hits while striking out six. Gallipani finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including two homeruns and one stolen base. Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles and a stolen base, while Zilka ended the game 2-for-4. Bejarano and Schneider each concluded the contest with one hit. In game two, St. Bonaventure inked two runs in the bottom of the second, but Buffalo battled back, tying the game in the top of the second.
Samantha Bundy (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) opened the inning with a single through the left side. Sheehan then reached on a fielder’s choice, with Bundy out at second on the play. After another UB out, Russell reached on an error, with Sheehan advancing to third. Next, Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) picked up an RBI with Sheehan scoring, reaching base thanks to a St. Bonaventure error. Finally, with the corners studded, Hansen effectively stole second, enabling Russell to score the Bulls’ second run of the inning. The Bonnies bounced back, however, plating one in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the bottom of the fifth to enter the sixth with an 8-2 advantage. In the top of the sixth, Bundy sparked another Buffalo rally, roping a one-out double to right center. Sheehan followed with a single, advancing Bundy to third. Gallipani then stepped to the plate, inking her fifth RBI of the day to score Bundy while diminishing the Bonnies’ lead to five runs.
After holding St. Bonaventure scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, Buffalo was unable to ink any runs in the top of the seventh, allowing the Bonnies to escape with the 8-3 win. Bundy and Barr both finished the game 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Bundy’s two hits were the first of her career. Bejarano, Sheehan and Gallipani ended with one hit each. Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean) took the loss on the mound, throwing the complete game, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs while recording two strikeouts. After 28 consecutive games on the road, the Bulls will open the home portion of their schedule on Friday, April 18. Buffalo is slated to host Miami (OH) in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 pm.
