ATHENS, OH - The University at Buffalo softball team received a shutout by freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) as it took the second game of a doubleheader against Ohio, 2-0. The Bulls fell 7-1 in the opener, Saturday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field. The game was changed to a doubleheader early Saturday morning with the anticipation of rain in the area for Sunday.

The Bobcats scored first in the opener, getting a run on a double in the bottom of the third inning. Ohio added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, all with two outs.

The Bulls picked up one run in the top of the sixth inning as Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) hit a one-out double to left center. She stole third and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy).

In the sixth inning the Bobcats increased their lead, adding another three runs, however only three of the seven runs given up by starter Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) were earned.

Barstad picked up the loss for the Bulls as she went the distance, but allowed eight hits and seven runs, while striking out four Bobcats. As for the opposition, the Ohio staff allowed Buffalo just three hits in the contest.

The story was Biernacki in the second game. The freshman walk-on pitched a complete game, while scattering just five hits, striking out two Bobcats and walking none. The victory was the first in Biernacki's career and improves her record to 1-3.

The Bulls took the lead in the first inning as they pieced together a run by playing small ball. Hansen singled to left field to start the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a ground out by Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and scored on the RBI ground out by Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia).

UB picked up another run in the fourth inning as Barstad busted out of a hitting slump and hit her fifth home run of the season to left field. Barstad continues to leads the team in RBIs, now with 22 on the season.

Biernacki retired the last six batters of the game in a row for the victory. She now joins fellow freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) as the only other pitchers to record a win besides Barstad.

The Bulls return to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they step out of league play and travel to cross-town rival Canisius. This doubleheader is a makeup of an earlier date that was postponed. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm.
