BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team ran into a hot-swinging Akron squad, falling in a doubleheader to the Zips. Akron took the first game by an 11-0 margin and won the nightcap, 12-4, Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The four runs scored by Buffalo in the first inning of game two was a season-high for runs scored in the opening frame.

After allowing five runs in the top of the first in game two, UB fought back as sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) hit a one-out double, plating senior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) and junior Lacy Schneider (Idylwild, CA/Hemet). The next batter was freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) who was hit by a pitch. That was the last pitch that Akron starter Sara Tervo would throw as game one starter, Lindsay Bodeker came on in relief. Zilka would come in to score on a fielder’s choice as would Barr to give UB its final two runs of the inning.

The big blow for Akron came in the third inning as it scored seven runs in the frame. UB was unable to answer, recording just one hit after the first inning. Barr picked up the loss for the Bulls as she went five innings, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs. She also struck out one batter.

In the first game, Akron scored in each of the five innings, including a four-run fourth inning, scoring 11 times in the affair. In that game the Bulls had a difficult time getting anything started, recording just three hits in the game. Junior Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) got the start in game one and picked up the loss despite pitching the complete game. Bodeker picked up the win in both games for Akron as she combined to strike out eight batters in the two games.

Greene went 2-for-3 in the second game and sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) had a hit in both contests to lead the way for the UB offense. Barr and Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy) both had hits in game one, while Zilka added a hit in game two, which was the two-run double.

The Bulls remain home this Friday as they host Northern Illinois in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
