Marcy Hansen ends the day 3-for-6 from the plate

KALAMAZOO, MI- The University at Buffalo softball team took the field against Western Michigan on Sunday, facing the Broncos in a doubleheader, scheduled as a result of a Saturday rainout.

The Bulls fell to WMU 7-2 in the day’s first game and 7-1 in the second game.

In the first game of the day, the Broncos scored five quick runs through the first two innings and added two more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.

Buffalo, however, appeared poised for a comeback, inking a duo of runs in the top of the sixth.

Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) drew a one-out walk and followed by stealing second. Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) then slammed a two-run homer to get the Bulls on the scoreboard.

UB was able to hold WMU scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bulls were unable to notch any runs in the top of the seventh as Buffalo suffered the 7-2 setback.

Zilka, Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Coarsegold) all finished the game 1-for- 3 from the plate.

In the day’s second game, the Bulls held onto a 1-0 lead through the first three and a half innings.

Stephanie Visperas (Newark, CA/Newark Memorial) got the Buffalo offense going in the top of the second, when the freshman belted a double to right center. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) kept the scoring drive alive by laying down a sacrifice bunt, ultimately advancing Visperas to third as Carter reached first on a fielder’s choice. Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) then picked up the RBI, as she singled up the middle to score Visperas.

In the bottom of the fourth, however, Western Michigan inked one and followed with six more over the next two innings to take a 7-1 lead into the seventh. The Bulls were unable to score in the top of the seventh therefore enabling the Broncos to score the 7-1 win.

Hansen finished the contest 2-for-3 from the plate, while Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego), Barr, Visperas, Kanavy and Lindsey Hampton (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) added one hit each.

The Bulls will return to the field on Tuesday, April 15 to face St. Bonaventure in a non-league doubleheader in Olean, NY. Gametime is set for 3:00 pm.
