Bulls Charge Back For Win Over Ohio

A three-run sixth inning gave Buffalo a 5-4 win over the Bobcats

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team got timely hitting and took advantage of two Ohio errors in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bulls scored three runs to earn a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Bobcats at the UB Softball Stadium. Sophomore Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field to help the Bulls improve to 11-14 overall and 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference. With the loss, Ohio falls to 6-20-1 overall and 2-12-1 in the MAC.

Buffalo got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when junior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) crossed the plate on a perfect squeeze bunt by sophomore Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) . The Bobcats' bats came alive in the fourth inning, beginning with Kiersten Scrima who led off with a double to left field. Scrima scored on a single by Emily Futscher, and a double by Georgia Villard later in the inning scored two runs to give Ohio a 3-1 lead. A single by Ross in the bottom of the fourth drove in Buffalo sophomore Jackie O'Brien (Selkirk, NY/Bethlehem Central) , but the Bobcats took the two-run lead right back in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Katie Davis that made the score 4-2 before the Bulls came charging back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) hit a bases-loaded grounder to third base, and Scrima's throw home went off the glove of Villard, allowing both Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ontario) District) and Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) to cross the plate. Magur then singled to left field to drive in Ross with the game-winning run.

Senior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) struck out two batters in the seventh before Sarah Melvin ripped a double to left field. Scrima was intentionally walked to put runners and first and second, but Sage got OU power hitter Erin Chapman to ground out to first to end the game. Sage earned the win for the Bulls, allowing just one hit and no runs in the final two innings of the game. Starting pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) allowed five hits and four runs and struck out nine in five innings of work. Ohio's Kerri Harley suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run in four innings pitched.

The Bulls host local rival Canisius in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 3 pm at the UB Softball Stadium before taking to the road for a three-game series at defending MAC Champion Central Michigan on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19.
