Bulls Drop Two at NIU

Teams will conclude three-game series on Sunday

DEKALB, IL The University at Buffalo softball team fell to 4-17 overall and 1-10 in the Mid-American Conference with two five-inning losses to the Northern Illinois Huskies this afternoon in DeKalb, IL, 9-0 and 9-1. The Huskies (15-19, 8-3 MAC) held the Bulls to just three hits on the afternoon while exploding for 12 hits of their own in the opener and 11 hits in the nightcap.

The Huskies opened game one with two runs in the first inning and then exploded for six runs on five hits in the second inning, with three runs being driven in by a bases-loaded double by Kathy LeClear. The Huskies finished the scoring in the fourth when a double by Paige Shemoski drove in Samantha Knoll. NIU had four doubles in the game, and starting pitcher Amy Krahula allowed just a leadoff single to center field by junior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) in the fourth inning to pick up her fifth win of the season. Sophomore Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) took the loss on the mound for the Bulls, allowing eight earned runs and striking out one.

Kensy reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a wild pitch to open the nightcap, but the Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and third, one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to end the game after five innings. Sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) led off the game with a single to center, and freshman Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) had the Bulls' only other hit in the game, also a single to center in the fourth inning. Kathy Dearborn picked up the win on the mound for the Huskies, striking out six batters, and junior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) took the loss for the Bulls, allowing just four earned runs and striking out three.

The Bulls and the Huskies will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday, April 14 beginning at 2 pm EST.
