Bulls and Bobcats Split Doubleheader
Jessica Kensy drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team got back on the field finally after an 11-day layoff due to the weather, and the Bulls earned a dramatic 3-2 win in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one against the visiting Ohio Bobcats before falling by a 2-0 score in game two of the Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the UB Softball Stadium. The split gives the Bulls a 10-14 overall record and a 2-6 league record, while Ohio moves to 6-19-1 overall and 2-11-1 in the MAC.
Buffalo began the scoring early in the day, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one. Sophomore Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) reached base on a dropped third strike, moved to third on a double down the left field line by junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Ohio's Jenny Tisevich.
 | | Jessica Kensy | The Bobcats took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded double to left center by Kiersten Scrima. Georgia Villard and Erika Rothbauer both crossed the plate, but Sarah Melvin was thrown out at home on the relay from Nasti to shortstop Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) to catcher Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering). The Bulls left two runners on base in the fifth but then tied the score in the sixth on a two-out double to right by junior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) that scored freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan). Nasti then led off the bottom of the seventh with a single down the left field line, and walks to Malone and freshman Erica Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) loaded the bases for senior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). Kensy hit a grounder to the right side of the infield, and Nasti beat second baseman Crystal Turner's throw home to end the game. Nasti and Ross both had two hits in the game for the Bulls while Scrima led the Bobcats with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with the two RBIs. Buffalo sophomore Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) earned her seventh win of the year on the mound, going the distance while allowing five hits and striking out five. Ohio's Kristie Howe suffered the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs in the final 3.1 innings.
Ohio scored one run in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning of game two of the doubleheader to earn the split.
 | | Julie Hibner | Tisevich reached on a fielding error with two outs in the fourth that allowed Melvin to cross the plate, and a single up the middle by Candy Warden then drove in Emily Futscher, who led off the fifth with a double to right field. The Bulls outhit the Bobcats by an 8-5 margin in game two, led by sophomore Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) who was 3-for-3 with a seventh-inning double and Magur who was 2-for-3 with a double in the third. Senior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulls, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Warden pitched the first four innings for Ohio to get credit for the win, while Kerri Harley came on in relief and picked up her first save of the season.
The Bulls and the Bobcats will conclude their three-game series with a single game beginning at 1 pm on Sunday, April 13 at the UB Softball Stadium.
