Bulls Sweep BonniesBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting St. Bonaventure this afternoon, 5-1 and 4-1, to equal its win mark from one year ago. The two victories improve Buffalo's record to 7-27 overall, while the Bonnies fall to 2-21 on the year with the two losses. The Bulls dominated both games, out-hitting the Bonnies by a 17-10 margin on the day and allowing just one run in the seventh inning of each game. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) got the Bulls on the board early in the opening game, hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Buffalo manufactured two more runs in the fifth inning, with freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) singling to drive in freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) and senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg/Erie CC) then hitting a triple to score Robbins. Buffalo went ahead 5-0 in the sixth inning when freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) drew a bases-loaded walk to score freshman Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park). The Bonnies threatened in the seventh, stringing together three hits and scoring one run before SBU's Dawn Setter grounded out to Nasti at short stop, stranding two runners on base. Robbins struck out six batters and picked up her third straight win to improve to 5-11 on the year, while Brianne Prince took the loss on the mound for the Bonnies. Lawrence led the Bulls with three hits, including a double and a triple, and Labella and sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) were both 2-for-3 from the plate. Ross put the Bulls on the board early in the nightcap when she singled and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder and then scored on a wild pitch. The Bulls scored three more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a three-run home run by Round, her second round-tripper of the season. The Bonnies put one run across the plate with two outs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jen LaBella, but pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) got Rayna McCartney to ground out to second to end the game. Sage allowed just three hits in the game, and just one in the final five innings, to earn her second win of the year. Round finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate with Buffalo's only three RBIs, while Nasti and Ross were both 2-for-3. Nasti had three hits on the day, giving her a school-record 42 for the season. Senior Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West/Erie CC) had previous held the record with 41 hits last year. The Bulls return to conference action this weekend, hosting Northern Illinois in a single game
on Friday, April 13 at 3 pm and in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 1 pm. |
