Softball Splits With Akron

Stacey Evans pitches second straight shutout

AKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon at Akron, winning the opener by a 4-0 score before falling 3-0 in the second game, to conclude its three-game series with the Zips. The split moves the Bulls' record to 12-15 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference while Akron goes to 16-16 overall and 2-7 in the MAC.

Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) pitched her second straight shutout in the opener, allowing just three hits and striking out seven while going the distance on the mound for the Bulls.

The Bulls scored two runs in the top of the second inning, with senior Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) hitting a leadoff single and eventually scoring on an Akron error and sophomore Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) hitting an RBI-single to center that scored senior Dominique Jones (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt). A two-run home run by junior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) in the sixth gave the Bulls some insurance runs, and Evans then retired the side in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the shutout.

Akron rebounded in the nightcap, getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Sara Zilles scored on a Buffalo error. The Zips put two more runs across the plate in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single to center by Stephanie Conrad. Akron pitcher Tina McCauley struck out eight and allowed just two hits in six innings to get credit for the win. Sara Tervo came on in relief in the seventh for her first save of the year. Buffalo pitcher Theresa Gugger (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley/Oneonta State) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs and striking out one in four innings of work.

The Bulls next host Bowling Green in a 2 pm doubleheader on Wednesday, April 14 at Nan Harvey Field.
