Bulls Come Up Short at Colgate

Sophomore Marce Ross hits first career home run in 10-9 loss

HAMILTON, NY The University at Buffalo softball team came up short in an offensive battle at Colgate this afternoon, dropping a 10-9 decision to the Red Raiders at Eaton Street Field. The loss drops the Bulls' record to 2-15 overall while Colgate improved to 12-13 on the year. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.

The Bulls jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three runs in the first inning on an error by Colgate first baseman Melissa Rawson, an RBI-grounder to third by freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) and an RBI-double by freshman Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem). The Red Raiders, however, answered back with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a one-out grand slam by Natalie Rawson. A sacrifice fly in the second by sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) that scored freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) cut Colgate's lead to 5-4, but the Red Raiders used the long ball to stay ahead of the Bulls. A solo home run in the fourth by Amanda Paolucci and two-run shots in the fifth and sixth by Natalie Rawson and Dorothy Donaldson, respectively, gave the Red Raiders double digits in runs.

The Bulls kept things close with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh before the Red Raiders quieted their comeback attempt. Sophomore Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) led off the sixth inning with a double to center and came around to score on a Colgate error before Round scored on a wild pitch and Hibner's second double of the game drove in junior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). In the seventh, Ross belted her first career home run, a two-run shot to center field with one out, and Round followed with a single to left field, but the Raiders got Kensy and sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) to ground out to end the game.

Junior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) began the game on the mound for the Bulls, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs for her fourth loss of the season. Sophomore Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) came on in the sixth inning and allowed one hit, the homer to Donaldson. Ross and Hibner both finished the game with two hits and two RBIs for the Bulls, and Nasti extended her hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate.

Buffalo returns home to host St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 pm.
