Eastern Michigan Bats Too Much For BullsBUFFALO, NY - The Eastern Michigan Eagles used four-run innings in the first and the fourth to defeat the University at Buffalo softball team, 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Eagles got off to a quick start in the game, hitting a two-run home run and then two bases loaded singles. The Bulls got out of the inning as they turned a double play.
UB got one back in the first inning as Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) led the inning off with a home run to center field. Russell has now homered in her last two games. EMU extended its lead in the fourth inning scoring four runs, all with two outs. The Eagles had four straight hits, including a two-run home run to left center. Eastern Michigan added one more in the fifth inning, to go up by eight. Nikki Denman got the victory for Eastern Michigan, as she pitched all five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Denman retired 10 of the Buffalo batters via strikeout and she went 2-for-4 from the plate.
Russell finished with both hits for Buffalo, striking a double down the left field line in the third inning. Junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) picked up the loss for Buffalo as she pitched 4.0 innings, allowing eight runs on 13 hits and two strikeouts. Sophomore Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) pitched the fifth inning, giving up on run on one hit and striking out two Eagles. The Bulls received a defensive gem in the third innings as sophomore Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) robbed Kayla Bluthhardt of a base hit as she dove to her left and grabbed the line drive. Buffalo and EMU wrap up the two-game series on Sunday with a 1:00 pm start at Nan Harvey Field. |
