Bulls Split Twinbill With BroncosBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team split its final two games of a three-game series at Western Michigan this afternoon, dropping the opener by a 3-2 score before winning the nightcap by a 5-4 score. The Bulls (5-27, 2-10 MAC) earned their first-ever Mid-American Conference win on Friday, defeating the Broncos by a 6-4 score in the first game of the three-game series. In this afternoon's opener, the Bulls opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning when freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) tripled to score freshmen Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) and Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). The Broncos, however, answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two Buffalo errors. Tight defense held the score deadlocked at 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh when three WMU singles resulted in the winning run crossing the plate with one out in the inning. Pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) took the loss on the mound despite allowing just one earned run and six hits while striking out five batters. In the nightcap, the Bulls scored all five of their runs in the second inning, and the Broncos responded with all four of their runs in the third inning. A double by sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) drove in Buffalo's first run of the game, and the Bulls used three hits and three WMU errors to put four more runs across the plate before the inning was over. Sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Moore, and a single by freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) scored sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) to put the Bulls up 3-0. Nasti then followed with a single to score Gilcrist and Round. The Broncos pounded five of their nine hits in the game in the third inning, scoring all four of their runs with two outs. The Bulls, however, remained focused and came up with outs when they needed them to earn their second MAC win of the year. The Broncos stranded four runners on base in the final four innings of the game. Robbins went the distance on the mound for the Bulls to pick up her second win of the weekend. Buffalo returns home to host St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 11 at 3
pm at the UB Softball Stadium. The Bulls will also host Northern Illinois in a single game on Friday,
April 13 at 3 pm and in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 1 pm. |
