Softball Concludes Play At AkronAKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo softball team concluded competition against the Akron Zips on Sunday in Akron. The Bulls were upended by the Zips, 10-2.
Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) had another strong day at the plate for UB, opening the game with her second lead-off homer in as many games to give the Bulls an immediate 1-0 lead. Akron then tied things up in the bottom of the first, but Buffalo answered, adding another run in the top of the second. Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) sparked the Bulls’ rally, as the sophomore spanked a two-out double. Next, Candice Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena) put the ball in play and reached first on an Akron error, which allowed Barr to score, giving Buffalo the 2-1 advantage.
The Zips would bounce back though, scoring nine runs on 10 hits and three UB errors to clinch the 12-2 win. For the Bulls, Zilka finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Barr, Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler), Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego), Wendy Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena/Bowling Green) and Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) also recorded one hit each. Buffalo will continue the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule on Friday, when the Bulls take on Northern Illinois in DeKalb. The doubleheader against the Huskies is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
