Broncos Hold On For 2-1 Win Over Bulls

Sophomore Breanne Nasti hits her fourth home run of the year

BUFFALO, NY The visiting Western Michigan Broncos got a few key hits and a strong pitching performance from junior Wendy Cannon to hold on for a 2-1 win over the University at Buffalo in Mid-American Conference softball action at the UB Softball Stadium. The loss came in the Bulls' home opener and dropped their record to 1-13 overall and 0-7 in the MAC. Western Michigan improved to 9-13 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

A two-out single down the left field line by senior Holly Seales drove in both of Western Michigan's runs in the top of the third inning, and the Broncos held Buffalo scoreless until a leadoff home run by sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) gave the Bulls a chance in the seventh. Sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) followed Nasti's homer with a single through the left side of the infield, but the Broncos held on to retire the next three batters and end the game. Buffalo also threatened in the third when junior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led off with a double to left field and freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) reached on a hard-hit grounder to short, but both were left stranded when Cannon ended the inning with one of her 10 strikeouts in the game. The Buffalo defense came up with some key plays to stay in the contest, causing the Broncos to strand two runners on base in both the fifth and seventh innings and seven runners total in the game. Junior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) struck out five while suffering her third loss of the year.

The Bulls will conclude their three-game series with the Broncos with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at Noon at the UB Softball Stadium.
