Softball Weekly Release April 4, 2000·The Week Past·
·On Deck·
Rough Going at Colgate Invitational The Bulls started their week with their first contests in Buffalo in 14 years as UB traveled for a doubleheader at Canisius. UB dropped both games to the Griffins 6-1 and 8-0. Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East) had the Bulls lone RBI in game one. From there, the Bulls headed to Hamilton, NY where they participated in the Colgate Invitational. UB dropped all six games and are now 4-22 on the season. In the opener against St. Bonaventure, the Bulls jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning which included Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) coaxing a bases loaded walk to start the rally. However, the Bonnies erupted for six runs in the fourth off starter Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) to take the 12-5 win. Against the host Red Raiders, UB dropped a 5-3 decision with Madden knocking in a pair of runs and Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi District) also picking up an RBI. The Bulls collected just four hits in their 9-4 loss to Columbia on Saturday. Moore was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Madden, Lawrence and Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) each had an RBI. An extra inning contest against Stony Brook was UB's best shot at snapping their losing streak. An international tiebreaker system is used in college softball to determine a winner where a runner is placed at second base to begin the inning. After UB failed to push the run across in the top of the eighth, Stony Brook scored the game winner for the 3-2 decision. Lisa Cox (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) was 2-for-2 with a run batted in while leadoff hitter Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) collected three hits and scored a run. Eight errors turned out to be the Bulls' downfall in their 14-3 loss to Dartmouth. Losing pitcher Kensy was tagged for all 14 runs in 6 2/3 innings but eight of those runs were unearned. Haynes and Kim Sudakow (Utica, NY/Proctor) were each 2-for-3 with Sudakow, Kensy and Cox collecting the RBIs. The tournament ended with a 9-3 loss to Manhattan as the fielding bug bit the Bulls again with seven errors in the contest. Moore had two hits to lead the Bulls while Sudakow and Cox each tripled and knocked in runs.
At the Plate As a team, the Bulls are hitting .271 on the season. Haynes leads the team with a .382 average and 26 hits. Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) still leads UB in homers (4) and has 12 RBIs although she has missed the last 14 games. With her four RBIs in the tournament, Madden has taken over the team lead with 13 and also has five doubles. She also had a five game hitting streak broken in the last game of the tourney. Haynes is 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts and has scored a team-high 15 runs. On the Mound The Bulls' pitching staff holds a team earned run average of 6.47 this season. Jessica York (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) leads the squad at 4.75 with a 1-4 record. Kensy lowered her ERA to 5.89 and is now 2-7. Sage is 1-11 on the hill with a 7.85 mark and a team-best 22 strikeouts.
Up Next The Bulls will christen their new home field, UB
Softball Stadium, on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m.
doubleheader against St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies will enter the
contest with 7-14 record after their 3-2 showing at the
Colgate Invitational. |
