Bulls Open MAC Play The University at Buffalo softball team kicked off the Mid-American Conference portion of its 2007 schedule with a weekend roadtrip, taking on the Toledo Rockets in a doubleheader on Friday and facing the Bowling Green Falcons in a doubleheader on Saturday. Rockets Upend Bulls Twice
Buffalo dropped two to Toledo, losing a 4-3 heartbreaker and the second game, 9-1. Junior Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) had a great day from the plate, finishing the Bulls’ series vs. the Rockets 4-of-6 with two RBIs and a double. In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, freshman pitcher Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Hemet) was phenomenal on the mound, throwing the complete game five-hitter, striking out four while giving up only three earned runs. Buffalo Bested By Bowling Green On a cold and blustery day in Ohio, the Bulls faced the Falcons in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Poor weather conditions forced the one-day doubleheader to take place rather than the single-games originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. UB fell in the first game 9-3 and later dropped the second game, 9-0. Freshman Liz Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic) was explosive at the plate, ending the day 3-of-5 while batting second in the batting order. Schneider had another solid day, inking two RBIs and her team-leading fourth homer of the year. Southpaw Stellar On The Mound
After being used sparingly on the mound last season, sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) has emerged as Buffalo’s top pitcher so far this season. Sporting a staff-low ERA of 6.49, Carter owns 13 appearances on the mound and has been solid in relief. On Saturday in the Bulls’ 9-0 setback to Bowling Green, Carter pitched two strong, scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three. Hauke Hops On Freshman infielder Liz Hauke has emerged an unexpected strong point of the Buffalo offense. In the opening weekend of MAC play, the walk-on started all four games for the Bulls, ending the weekend with a .444 batting average (4-of-9) while sporting the team’s highest on base percentage (.545) out of the players that participated in all four games. On the season, Hauke is currently third on the team in batting average (.235). Next Up
The Bulls will host their home-opener on Wednesday, April 4 in a non-league doubleheader against Pittsburgh. Weather permitting, the first game is slated to commence at 3:00 pm immediately followed by the second game. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on WLVL 1340 AM, as part of UB’s expanded radio broadcast schedule. Brendan McDaniels, who calls the play-by-play for the UB women’s basketball team, will call the play-by-play and Jackie O’Brien will provide color commentary from Nan Harvey Field. |
