Bulls Fall In Pitcher's Duel

Toledo hits game-winning home run in the seventh

BUFFALO, NY - Toledo catcher Alison Hess hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to propel the Rockets to a 2-0 victory over Buffalo, Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field.

The Bulls and Rockets engaged in a pitcher's duel with the Bulls falling on the short end. The Rockets got the first scoring opportunity as they hit a two-out triple in the fourth. However, junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) recorded her sixth strikeout of the afternoon to end the threat. Barstad finished the afternoon with a season-high 10 strikeouts, allowing just four hits, but took the loss for the Bulls, as they fell to 8-26 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.

UB had the chance to take the lead in the sixth inning, with Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) on second base and two outs. Barstad singled to right field, but Russell was gunned down at home by the left fielder, keeping the game scoreless.

Barstad got the first Rocket batter to ground out in the seventh inning, but then allowed her first of two walks on the afternoon. The Rockets took advantage of the rare base runner, as Hess hit a shot that cleared the fence in left center scoring the only two runs of the game.

In the seventh, the Bulls got a runner on first base with a Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) single, she went 2-for-3 on the day. She was replaced with freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) as a pinch runner. However, Biernacki never left first base as Toledo hurler Sierra Pereira struck out the final two batters, giving Toledo its first conference win of the season.

The Bulls outhit Toledo, 5-4, in a game that featured the two pitchers. Pereira came out on top as she pitched the complete game for her fourth win of the season, striking out five and not walking a single UB batter.

These two teams meet again tomorrow, wrapping up the two-game series. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm at Nan Harvey Field.??
