Softball Faces Second MAC OpponentBOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The University at Buffalo softball team took on its second Mid-American Conference opponent on Saturday, facing the Bowling Green Falcons in Bowling Green, OH. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a single game on Saturday and a single game on Sunday but the games were replaced by the single-day doubleheader due to a poor weather forecast for Sunday. The Bulls were upended in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, falling 9-3 in game one and dropping game two 9-0.
In the opener, the Bulls jumped on the board, inking a run in the top of the first. Freshman Liz Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic) roped a single to right and advanced to second when Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) was hit by a pitch. Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) then hit a single to left to score Hauke. After allowing one Falcon run in the bottom half of the first and two more in the second, Buffalo plated another in the top of the third as the UB top of the order got things going once again. Hauke stroked her second hit of the game, advancing to second on a Greene single. Schneider then got on thanks to a fielders choice with Hauke out at third. Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) drew a walk to load the bases with Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) then getting laced with a pitch to score Greene.
BGSU scored three over the next two innings until Buffalo’s offense tabbed another run in the top of the fifth on a Schneider homer over the leftfield fence for her fourth homerun of the year. That was all the offense the Bulls were able to muster, however, as the Falcons went on to send three more across the plate in the bottom of sixth to set the game final at 9-3. Hauke ended the game 3-for-4 from the plate while Schneider collected two hits and a duo of RBIs. Additionally, Greene and Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) threw in one hit each.
In the second game, the Falcons got off to a hot start and never looked back, scoring all nine runs over the first three innings. Buffalo, meanwhile never found its offensive stroke, as Zilka and Brittany Hussong (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) were the only players to record hits for the Blue and White. The Bulls are now 2-29 overall and 0-4 in the MAC. UB is scheduled to host its home opener on Wednesday, April 4 with a non-league doubleheader against Pittsburgh. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
