Bulls Drop MAC Opener In Wet ConditionsBUFFALO, NY - After playing the first 32 games of the season away form home, the University at Buffalo softball team finally took the field at Nan Harvey Field and its conference opener, dropping the first game by a score of 1-0. The second game, which was interrupted by a rain delay lasting 1:16, was a 4-1 Falcon victory. The Falcons used a solid pitching performance from Liz Vrabel, who struck out 11 Buffalo batters, while allowing just three hits. Her counterpart, junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one unearned run, which was given up in the third inning.
The Bulls first threat came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Willaimsville South) got the first UB hit on the afternoon, a two-out single to center field. She was followed by Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill), who was hit by a pitch. However, the UB threat came to an end when Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett) struck out. UB threatened again in the seventh inning as sophomore Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westhill) began the inning with a single. Freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) came in as a pinch runner and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but she would remain there as the Bulls hit into the final two outs of the game to drop the conference opener. In the second game, the Bulls got into early trouble as the Falcons had the bases loaded, but UB hurler Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) pitched out of the jam to keep the game scoreless. In the top half of the fourth, not only did the BGSU runs start coming, but so did the rain. Bowling Green put two runs on the board before the game was halted due to the weather. After the game resumed, the Falcons put another two runs on the board with a two-run home run by Ashley Zirkle in the sixth.
The Bulls were able to score one in the bottom of the inning and freshman Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a shot to left center. It is as close as the Bulls would get in the game. UB remains home as it begins a two-game set with Toledo, beginning at 2:00 pm tomorrow. The two teams wrap up their series with a 1:00 pm start on Sunday. |
