Lacy Schneider goes 4-for-6 in league doubleheader

TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team kicked-off the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule on Friday, taking on the Toledo Rockets in a doubleheader in Toledo. The Bulls were upended in both of the day’s games, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in game one and later falling 9-1 in game two.

In the day’s opener, the Rockets tabbed the Bulls for three runs in the bottom of the first but Buffalo fought back, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the third. Freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) started the inning with a single and was then moved over by a Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) hit. Both runners advanced thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Elizabeth Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic). Hansen went onto score on a Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) grounder with Gaetano plating the second run on Schneider’s double to right field.

UB tied the game in the top of the fourth, as freshman pitcher Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) roped a single and later scored on a passed ball. After a scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Toledo took the game on a two-out, walk-off single.

Barr was stellar on the mound for the Bulls, throwing the complete game, giving up six hits while striking out four. Hansen ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate while Greene, Schneider, Barr and Gaetano all tallied one hit.

In the nightcap, Toledo took a strong lead, scoring six runs over the first two innings. Buffalo threw one on the board in the top of the third as Hauke struck a single and later scored on another Schneider hit to set the score at 6-1. Unfortunately, the one run was all the Bulls were able to ink, as the Rockets scored three more in the bottom of the fourth to upend UB 9-1.
