Softball Splits at Eastern Michigan

Ann Magur goes 4-for-4 with five RBIs in 9-0 UB win in game two

YPSILANTI, MI - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a 3-1 decision in game one but then exploded for a 9-0 win in the nightcap to earn a split in today's doubleheader at Eastern Michigan. Senior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) led the Bulls' charge in game two, going 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs. Buffalo is now 6-20 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-American Conference while Eastern Michigan moved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the MAC.

Junior Lisa Wheat (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) hit a pinch-hit home run to lead off the seventh inning of game one, but EMU pitcher Aimee Woodrum retired the next three batters to preserve the 3-1 win. Wheat's homer, the first of her career, was the Bulls' only hit in the game. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on RBI-doubles by Lindsay Schmid and Lauren Allen, and they added a single tally in the fifth on an RBI-double by Liz Flack. Senior pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) allowed 11 hits, including four doubles, and struck out three in the complete-game loss.

Magur got the Bulls' offense going early in game two with a single to center in the top of the first that scored freshman Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview), who led off the game with a walk. The score remained 1-0 until the Bulls broke things open with a four-hit, five-run fourth inning. Singles by freshman Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) and sophomore Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) followed by back-to-back walks by sophomore Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) and junior Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) put the first run of the inning across the plate. Magur then cleared the bases with a double, and senior Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) followed with a double to score Magur. Buffalo then added three more runs in the sixth inning to put the game further out of reach.

Kor led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a single to right by Magur. Russell, who reached base on an error, then scored on a wild pitch, and Magur scored the final run of the game on another error on a hit to third by Schneider. Sophomore pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) pitched the complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out one. Starter Michelle Lloyd took the loss for the Eagles, giving up seven hits and six runs in 3.2 innings of work. Reliever Krissy Threet allowed three hits and three runs, one earned, in the final 2.1 innings.

The Bulls play a three-game series at Kent State this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game both begin at 1 pm.
