Softball Loses Final Game at Marshall, 7-2

Sophomore Breanne Nasti hits third home run of the year

HUNTINGTON, WV - The University at Buffalo softball team gave up seven runs in the third inning to lose its final game of a three-game series at Marshall this afternoon, 7-2. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 1-12 on the year and 0-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Thundering Herd improved to 10-14 overall and 3-3 in the MAC. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Buffalo, but was moved to Huntington due to snow and wet conditions at the UB Softball Stadium.

Sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) got Buffalo on the board first with a two-out solo home run in the first inning. Marshall exploded for seven runs in the third, getting seven of its 11 hits in the game off of pitchers Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) and Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad). The Thundering Herd strung together six singles to score three runs, and two runs crossed the plate when Marshall batters were hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Their final two runs in the inning came on a two-out double to right field by Nikki Wilcox. Marshall threatened again in the sixth inning, but the Thundering Herd stranded three runners on base when Evans struck out three consecutive batters swinging to get out of the jam. The Bulls' final run in the game came in the seventh inning when Nasti scored on a wild pitch.

Freshmen Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) and Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) had two hits apiece in the game, and Evans finished with five strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings pitched. Robbins allowed five earned runs and was credited with her third loss of the year.

The Bulls now return home to host Canisius on Tuesday, April 2 in their home opener at the UB Softball Stadium. The doubleheader will begin at 3 pm. Buffalo will then play a doubleheader at Colgate on Wednesday, April 3 before hosting St. Bonaventure on Friday, April 5 and Western Michigan in a three-game MAC series on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7.
