Bulls Drop Twin Bill Against PittsburghPITTSBURGH, PA - Playing its first non-tournament game of the 2006 season, the University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games to Pittsburgh, falling 3-2 and 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at Trees Field. With the loss, the Bulls drop to 8-23 on the season.
The Bulls got off to a fast start in the opening game, scoring a run in the top of the second. Freshman Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) led off the inning with a double to right field. After a UB out, she was driven in on a single to center field by sophomore Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet). The Bulls had their chance for more, but the inning ended when Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) was thrown out at home following a Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett) single. The Panthers tied the game up in the bottom of the inning on a home run to left center and then took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Neither team was able to cross the plate again until the Buffalo half of the seventh inning. With two outs, Cafazzo reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on the next play as junior Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) hit a double to pull the Bulls within one. UB loaded the bases, but junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) was unable to drive anyone home, grounding out to third and ending the game. Barstad took the loss for Buffalo as she pitched a complete game, giving up five hits, two earned runs and striking out six Panthers. She drops to 7-12 on the year. In the second game it was defensive errors and poor decisions that cost the Bulls early. Pittsburgh put up seven runs in the first two innings, all four of the second inning runs came with two outs.
UB fought back in the game scoring a run in the fifth inning when freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) crossed the plate after a Pittsburgh throwing error allowed the Buffalo runners to advance. The Bulls added one more on the board in the seventh inning as Carter again scored, this time on a Cafazzo ground out.
Sophomore Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) pitched the complete game for Buffalo and despite taking the loss pitched her best game on the season. She allowed four earned runs, while giving up nine hits and striking out two. The Bulls now turn their attention to their home opener and the beginning of conference play as they host Bowling Green for a doubleheader on Friday, March 31, beginning at 1:00 pm.
