Softball Drops Two at Marshall

Nasti has five hits and Ross has four hits in doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, WV - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Marshall this afternoon, 4-3 and 7-1, to fall to 1-11 on the year and 0-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Buffalo, but were moved to Huntington due to snow and wet conditions at the UB Softball Stadium.

Buffalo opened up an early 3-0 lead after two innings in game one, but Marshall (9-14, 2-3 MAC) came back with four runs in the fifth to steal the victory. Sophomore Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) had a leadoff single in the first inning and scored on a single by sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) before freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan), who had reached base on an error by Marshall catcher Kerri Britt, scored on a wild pitch. Ross again singled in the second and scored on a single by Nasti to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead, but the Thundering Herd scored four runs on three hits in the fifth inning, including an RBI-double by Nichole Corrigan and RBI-singles by Nikki Wilcox and Sierra Davenport. Nasti and Ross both went 3-for-4 in the game, and Melissa Pace was 1-for-3 for Buffalo's only other hit on the afternoon. Freshman Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) gave up nine hits and struck out four batters in seven innings while taking the loss on the mound.

In game two, the Herd scored seven runs in the first five innings, and the Bulls were only able to put a single run across the plate in the fifth on a double by Nasti to score Ross, who had reached base on a two-out single to center field. Melissa Pace singled after Ross and was throw out at the plate while trying to score on Nasti's double. Nasti was 2-for-4 in the game and junior Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) was 2-for-3. Sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) was 1-for-3 with her first double of the season. Starting pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) allowed 10 hits and five earned runs and struck out one batter in five innings of work.

The Bulls will conclude their three-game series with the Thundering Herd with a single game tomorrow beginning at 11 am.
