The University at Buffalo softball team played in its final preseason tournament over the weekend, participating in the Indiana University Classic, hosted by the Big Ten’s Hoosiers. Other attendees included: Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan and the University of Illinois-Chicago of the Horizon League. The Bulls fell in all five games. Bulls Attempt To Extinguish Flames On Wet Friday In the tournament opener, Buffalo faced-off against a strong Illinois-Chicago squad. In soggy conditions, the Bulls were unable to dim the Flames, falling 11-1. The Bulls were led by Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) and Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) who each turned in hits, as well as a fourth-inning single from sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and a fifth-inning single from freshman Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean).
UB Offense Present In Setback Vs. EMU Facing MAC foe Eastern Michigan on Saturday in a game originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, the Bulls came up short, falling to the Eagles 8-6. Despite the setback, Buffalo’s offense was extremely present, as Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) and Greene both stroked homers in the game.
Glory For Gaetano Freshman walk-on Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) has established herself as a steady starter in the Bulls’ outfield as well as an offensive star in the batters box. In Sunday’s 10-2 loss to Indiana, Gaetano went 3-for-3 with both of the team’s RBIs to finish the three-day tournament with a .364 batting average (4-for-11) with a trio of RBIs. Crunching The Numbers With league play just around the corner, a handful of Buffalo players have established themselves as star sluggers. Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) has quietly established herself as the team’s top batter, hitting .257 through 27 games. The junior is also 9-for-9 in stolen bases. Freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) leads the team in doubles (5) and RBIs (13) while Schneider has slammed a trio of homers this year to lead the team in longballs.
Next Up After just over a month of preseason action, Buffalo kicks-off the MAC portion of its schedule this weekend. The Bulls are scheduled for a doubleheader against Toledo on Friday with single games at Bowling Green set for both Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s action will commence at 1:00 pm in Toledo with Saturday’s match-up against the Falcons scheduled for 2:00 pm and Sunday’s game inked for 1:00 pm, both to be played in Bowling Green, Ohio. |
