Softball Weekly ReleaseBULLS BEGIN MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE PLAY
The Bulls began their first season of Mid-American Conference play with three losses at Kent State over the weekend. The Bulls dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, 1-0 and 4-1, before losing a single game on Saturday, 5-3. In Friday's opener, the Golden Flashes scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning and were able to hold on for the victory by limiting the Bulls to just two hits. Sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) and senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each recorded a single in the loss. In the nightcap, Kent State put two runs across the plate in the third and fifth innings, and Moore drove in freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with Buffalo's lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Moore was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Nasti was 2-for-2 with a double, her 11th of the season, and one run scored to lead the Buffalo attack. On Saturday, a three-run home run by sophomore Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) in the top of the first inning gave the Bulls an early 3-0 lead, but the Golden Flashes answered back with four runs in their first at bat before adding a single run in the fourth inning to earn the 5-3 come-from-behind victory. Freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) went 1-for-3 with a double in the loss.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Freshmen Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) and Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) both hit doubles over the weekend at Kent State, giving Buffalo a school-record 27 doubles so far this season. The 2000 Bulls and the 1987 Bulls each recorded 25 doubles as a team. Nasti is leading the Bulls with a UB single-season record 11 doubles on the year, while sophomore Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) has four and Ross and freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) both have three apiece. The Bulls also have a school-record 10 home runs so far this season, with Nasti accounting for seven of them, Malone for two and Robbins for one.
NASTI EARNS SECOND MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the second time in three weeks, freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) was named Mid-American Conference East Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday, March 20 by the conference office. Nasti hit .412 (7-for-17) with 11 RBIs, three doubles, one triple and one home run in five games at the Ohio State Buckeye Invitational en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team. She helped the Bulls to a third-place finish with a 4-for-5 performance in their 13-2 win over IUPUI in the consolation final. Of her four hits, three were doubles and one was a home run, and she drove in nine of Buffalo's 13 runs. Nasti currently leads the Bulls with 30 hits and a .441 batting average so far this season. Her team-leading 28 RBIs and seven home runs are both UB single-season records. She became the first player in UB softball history to receive MAC East Player of the Week honors when she received the first weekly award of the 2001 season on March 5.
