Softball Wraps Up Competition At IU Classic

Freshman Samantha Gaetano ends day a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs

BLOOMINGTON, IN – The University at Buffalo softball team completed action at the Indiana University Classic on Sunday, ending the preseason portion of its 2007 schedule.

In Sunday’s doubleheader, the Bulls fell to the University of Chicago-Illinois 13-0 and dropped another to Indiana 10-2.

Against the Flames in the opening game of the day, Buffalo gave up six early first inning runs and had trouble mounting offensive pressure, giving up seven more over the next three innings. Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont), Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) all ended 1-for-3 from the plate, each collecting a single in the game.

In the day’s second game against the Hoosiers, Buffalo held Indiana to four runs through three and inked a run of its own in the top of the fourth. After both Barr and Carter drew walks, freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) singled to left-center to score Barr and get the Bulls on the board.

Then, with the Hoosiers owning a 5-1 advantage, Gaetano struck again, singling to left to score classmate Jackie Burke (West Seneca, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy). Unfortunately, the comeback attempt was short-lived, as IU inked five in the bottom of the sixth to pull away with the 10-2 win.

Gaetano finished the game 3-for-3 with both of Buffalo’s RBIs while Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) and Hansen each added a hit.

The Bulls are slated to open up Mid-American Conference competition on Friday, March 30 with a doubleheader at Toledo. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
