Bulls Drop A Pair At State Farm InviteGREENVILLE, NC - For the second straight day the University at Buffalo softball team was unable to cross the plate falling on the short-end of a 13-0 decision against sixth-ranked California and 4-0 to East Carolina, Saturday night at the East Carolina State Farm Pirate Classic.
The Bulls met a red-hot California team who entered the tournament off a victory against the Chinese National Team. The Bears, the second nationally-ranked team the Bulls have faced this season, put up 13 runs, which is tied for the second most they have put up in a game this season. Junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) started the game for Buffalo, but had a hard time figuring out the California bats. In the second game, Barstad also got the starting nod and pitched well in the 4-0 loss to the Pirates. The majority of the ECU runs were unearned.
Junior Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) went 2-for-3 on the night as she led the Bulls in the hitting department. Freshman Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) continues to impress as she hit her first extra-base hit of her career, a double. Sophomores Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) both picked up hits on the night. The Bulls have been playing the last few games shorthanded as several players are recovering from injuries as UB creeps closer to conference play, which begins this Friday. The Bulls have one game left in the tournament as they meet Coastal Carolina on Sunday morning at 11:00 am. Like the Bulls, the Chanticleers are looking for their first victory in the tournament. |
