Bulls Get Shut Out at Canisius

Sophomore Breanne Nasti has UB's only hit in 9-0 loss

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team was shut out at Canisius College on a freezing cold afternoon in downtown Buffalo. The Golden Griffs (9-6) held a 3-0 lead after three innings before breaking the game open with six runs in the fourth to earn a 9-0 victory at the Demske Sports Complex. The Bulls (1-9) were held to just one hit on the afternoon and hurt their cause by committing three errors in the field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to the cold weather conditions.

A single by Ashley Gonnello in the second inning put the first run across the plate, but the Bulls got out of the inning with bases loaded when Amy Dodd was thrown out at first by Buffalo catcher Missy Switzer (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West/Valparaiso) after hitting a dribbler in front of the plate. The Griffs got two more runs in the third inning, beginning when a double by Rebecca Murphy scored Jill Iacono who had led off the inning with a single up the middle. Murphy then crossed the plate on a double-steal on a first-and-third situation to put Canisius up 3-0 with no outs. Buffalo ended the inning with a strikeout by pitcher Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and two groundouts to sophomore Dominique Jones (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) at second base.

Sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led off the Buffalo fourth inning with a single to center field, but Buffalo was unable to generate any other offense. The Griffs broke things open in the bottom of the fourth with six runs on five hits, including a two-run home run by Tempie Coelho-Freeman. Canisius finished the game with 14 hits. Kensy took the loss on the mound for the Bulls, her second of the season. She allowed just four earned runs and struck out three batters. Canisius' Veronica Maher picked up her fifth victory of the season.

The Bulls are scheduled to open the home portion of their 2002 schedule this weekend, Friday and Saturday, March 29, with a three-game Mid-American Conference series against Marshall. Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 pm and Saturday's single game is scheduled for 1 pm at the UB Softball Stadium.
